Hunyuan3D 2.1, from Tencent, is the open-source standout in AI 3D. Released June 2025 as the first production-ready open 3D asset model, it ships full model weights and training code under the Tencent Hunyuan 3D 2.1 Community License — so you can fine-tune and extend it directly. Self-host it on a capable GPU and the marginal cost per asset is zero; hosted APIs are also available.
Its headline upgrade is a physically-based rendering (PBR) texture pipeline that replaces the older RGB texture model, producing photorealistic light interaction (metallic reflections, subsurface scattering). The shape and paint models are a few billion parameters each and even run on Mac.
Worth knowing: Tencent’s newer Hunyuan3D 3.0 (Sept 2025) and 3.1/Global (Nov 2025) moved to a 3D-DiT architecture but are proprietary — accessed via the web platform and Tencent Cloud API, not open-sourced. So for an open, self-hostable model the 2.1 release remains the one to beat. The caveats are practical: real GPU resources for self-hosting, a community license with revenue and territory restrictions, and a less polished UX than commercial apps like Meshy or Rodin.
Best for
- Self-hosted, high-volume 3D pipelines
- Custom fine-tunes and research
- Cost-controlled asset generation at scale
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Fully open — weights and training code released for fine-tuning
- Production-ready, physics-based (PBR) texture pipeline
- Self-host for full control at no per-asset cost (Mac supported)
Limitations
- Self-hosting needs a capable GPU
- Community license has revenue/territory restrictions; less polished UX
