Grok Imagine Image 2.0

xAI's editing-first image model — Arena #2 in both T2I and image editing behind GPT-Image-2, with magic wand, segmentation, multi-reference compositing and templates.

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is xAI’s August 7, 2026 image model — and the release that turns Grok’s image tools from a consumer feature into a professional creative platform. It ranks #2 globally on both the Arena text-to-image and image-edit leaderboards, behind only GPT-Image-2.

The previous Quality Mode model sat mid-table on both arenas. Image 2.0 jumped to second in one release — a bigger leap than most labs manage in a year. The model ships under the SpaceXAI brand, reflecting xAI’s corporate restructuring.

How it compares

  • vs GPT-Image-2: GPT-Image-2 holds #1 on both arenas. Image 2.0 closes the gap significantly (especially on editing) but isn’t there yet. GPT-Image-2 has a public API; Image 2.0’s API is “coming soon.”
  • vs Midjourney v8.1: Midjourney remains the aesthetic/artistic standard but doesn’t offer editing tools or Arena-style evaluations. Different strengths.
  • vs FLUX.2 / FLUX 3: FLUX models are developer-focused with API-first access. Image 2.0 is consumer-first with professional editing layered on.
  • vs Ideogram 3.0: Ideogram was the typography leader. Image 2.0 now claims competitive text rendering — the Arena edit rankings suggest it’s real.

Limitations

  • No API yet. Professional workflows that need programmatic access are blocked until the API launches.
  • Rankings are from public leaderboards. xAI cites them but they’re not independent lab evaluations.
  • Consumer pricing only. No published per-generation or per-call pricing for when the API arrives.
  • SpaceXAI naming. Models appear under SpaceXAI on Arena, which can cause confusion with the xAI/Grok brand.

Best for

  • Professional image editing with precise regional control
  • Product photography and e-commerce visuals via templates
  • Marketing materials with accurate typography
  • Multi-reference compositing for character consistency
  • Game asset and streaming emoji creation

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Arena
  • Editing as first-class capability — magic wand, segmentation, background removal, smart resize
  • Multi-reference compositing — accepts up to 5 input images in a single generation
  • Sharp typography and layout — handles dense multi-part visuals and small text

Limitations

  • API access not yet available — currently consumer-product only (grok.com and apps)
  • Arena rankings are self-reported by xAI from public leaderboards — no independent evaluation beyond those standings
  • Still behind GPT-Image-2 on both arenas (T2I Elo 1,320 vs 1,380; Edit Elo 1,439 vs 1,463)
  • SpaceXAI branding transition may cause confusion in model identification
